The light infantry is meant to be "light" and historically we would be travelling by foot in advance of the army. That meant no wagons and only what we carried, either in our hands or on our backs.
For this reason, we have backpacks, which are handy at many events for carrying the essentials. They are also good for demonstrations to the public, should you ever want to open your pack and explain the wares.
Here's some advice from our very own John Kahler on what he carries, but he notes that you can individualize what you haul:
- Wool blanket
- Canvas painted drop cloth, can be used as a shelter
- Length of hemp rope
- Rain shirt made of oiled cotton
- Spare shirt
- Work shirt or smock
- Spare socks
- Moccasins
- Wool half gloves
- Workmans cap, or forage cap if you prefer
- Musket cleaning kit
- Housewife (sewing kit) with needles, thread and extra buttons
- Eating utensils
John also adds that if you can't carry it in in one trip; you probably don't need it, and you are making more work for yourselves.
