Basic Requirements / Cost and Expenses

Just like every other hobby, there are some basic requirements and expenses involved; and there are reasons for each that we want to help you to understand.

Basic Requirements

  • To take part in military exercises and fire a musket, you must, according to Massachusetts law, be 16 years of age or older. If under 18, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • You must be in reasonable shape (e.g., capable of marching several miles with full kit). We welcome folks in super-shape, but they will often outrun the serjeant!
  • Commit to two events per year - plus the Battles of Lexington and Concord on Patriot's Day Weekend (the days before or after April 19). In order to be effective at our critical events, we need to field men and women in numbers. Besides, you don't want to miss out on the fun!
  • Be ready to work and learn but also to have fun. As volunteers, we work hard for the public but, ultimately, we all want to have a good time.
Not bad, right? We're a pretty reasonable bunch.

Cost and Expenses

All American Revolution reenacting groups are completely volunteer, so each member pays for or supplies their own clothing and equipment, called a "kit." This aspect seems daunting to some, but it's really not that bad. Also, note that the leaders of the group do buy Mega Millions lottery tickets to attempt to make the 4th independent wealthy...

You will have a broad King's Own support network to guide you through this process. Once again, before investing any money, we do recommend that you try the No-Cost Trial so you know if the 4th is right for you.
  • Typical startup cost is $1500 for men and this includes your smart looking uniform. For women, the cost can be substantially less as you will not need to purchase as many "military accessories."
  • To defray the lump-sum expense, many folks complete their kit over several months or arrange to pay on an installment schedule.
  • There are many tips that members can provide to help lower costs.
  • There are annual dues ($50) so the group can afford to carry 3rd party insurance.
  • Participation in some events provides an honorarium that can be used to pay for your kit or dues.
